Our next overseas event is the 2021 49er/FX World Championships. This event is scheduled for 16 -21 November and the venue is Al Musnaah, Oman.
This is a peak event for us after a long hiatus from racing due to covid. The last time we raced internationally was in February 2020, at the World Championships in Geelong where we finished 42nd. As we haven’t raced internationally in some time, it is hard to gauge a result goal on the fleet, but we’ll be looking to improve on our previous events. Therefore, for Oman 2021 our goal is to sail to our potential and let the hard work that we have put in quietly over the past two years show on the racecourse.
This event will also be unique due to the pandemic. To minimize risk of spreading covid-19, time in the boat park, training and pre-regattas have been minimized; usually for an event of this calibre we would also have a warmup regatta at the same venue prior to the main races. Due to current risks with covid this isn’t possible, and we will go straight into racing after rigging up and some practice sessions. We’ll also have to isolate on arrival and when we return home. However, these are circumstances we can’t change and to us this event is invaluable as we need to make up the racing experience that we have missed out on within the last two years.
We are now just over three months out from these Worlds and are looking to maximize our training in the build-up to our pinnacle event of 2021.
